In the game

A lake fills the valley and a path runs all the way round its shore. The old Lake Ring park still runs: tired rides far apart, swan boats and one toilet by the gate. Take it over and make the water pay.

Mostly water: the dry land is the shore and the four corners. Build out over the lake, put boats on it, and make the long walk round worth it.

For thirty summers the Lake Ring was the town’s day out: a stroll all the way round the water, a ride at every bend and swan boats by the gate. The owner is retiring and the park is yours, running, as it is: the rides are old, the stalls overcharge, there is one toilet for a walk of two kilometres, and the bank wants its money. The crowds still come for the lake. Give them a reason to stay.

Lake Ring is a takeover: the park is running when you arrive in July, with guests on the paths, queues at the rides and two months of books behind it. Its handover, on the map’s card and in Park › Goal, lists what works, what needs fixing and what the bank wants, all from the park’s own numbers.

Most of the map is water. The dry land is the shore ring, the four corners and an island off the north-east shore, so the park grows outward: boats on the lake, walkways out over the water, rides in the corners. The goal is a big crowd with a high rating and the loan paid off, over three years.

Lake Ring is a 96 × 96 tile map of a lake that fills the valley, a level shore all the way round it and an island, played on the Tycoon setting, with the weather mild and sunny. You take it over running, in July of Year 1, with $3,200 in cash and a loan of $15,000 at 14% interest; the bank lends up to $40,000. Research starts with a budget of $300. It is free: a chapter of the free campaign. On Tycoon, rides wear half as fast again and guests are harder to please.

Goals

The goal on Normal: 425 guests with a rating of 775, by the end of Year 3.

On Hard: 450 guests with a rating of 800 and the loan paid off, by the end of Year 3. A bigger crowd, a higher rating and the bank paid back, on the same tycoon rules, with less cash at the handover. You start with $2,200.

On ♛ Baron: 500 guests with a rating of 830 and the loan paid off, by the end of Year 3. Baron rules: the strictest guests, the fastest wear, less cash at the handover, a bigger crowd and a higher rating than Hard, and the loan paid off. You start with $500.

Bonus goals: Bumper Boats and Swan Boats on the lake; A walkway out to the island; Keep every ride above 60% reliability for a month; Average review 4.0★ or better for 3 days.

Ready to build from the start: Merry-Go-Round, Spinning Teacups, Ferris Wheel, Bumper Cars, Burger Bar, Drinks Stall, Ice Cream Kiosk, Popcorn Stand, Balloon Stall, Toilets, Information Kiosk, Swing Ride, Haunted House, Bumper Boats, Swan Boats, Log Flume, Lemonade Stand, Junior Coaster and Water Coaster; everything else is researched.

The suggested theme is Pirate Cove: a harbour town round the lake: jetties, galleons and treasure on the shore. It starts researched.
